Motivational Safety or Distraction
I am a C7 Quadriplegic – which means I have very little balance and need to be aware of obstacles when wheeling. Like everyone I need to exercise, today I went to a park which is 1 KM around the path. I like this particular park, because there is a nice flat even concrete path to wheel on.
My plan (I hate the word goal I think it is over used) was to wheel 6 laps in 1 hour. On lap 2 a very shapely women of about 35 jogged past & said good morning, she had a very revealing pair of shorts on, so straight away my speed increased.
My question was this motivation or was it a distraction that infringed on my safety?
Whilst I wheel without distraction in my unconscious mind I am breathing well, wheeling so as not to injury my shoulders and generally aware of the terrain for things such as dog shit!
I would suggest for a few hundred meters I was not aware of safety but trying to keep up to the person in front of me. Sure I probably increased my speed but my safety was jeopardised. Unfortunately my increased speed and risk to life and limb was in vain, as I did not see this person again. She must have exited the park.
Back to my plan of consistent speed that I could hold for an hour, on lap 3 a male of similar age and fitness passed me and suggested we race, I said the competition was that he could not lap me.
So this time I probably increased my speed for a different reason and I suggest I was wheeling in a safe manner. Just before the end of lap 6 he passed me.
Next question if these people had passed in reverse, if the male had passed first would I had the energy to try and keep up with the women?
I would like to make a couple of points:
Firstly be careful of things you think are motivational as they may also be unsafe.
Secondly even if your motivation appears to vanish keep to your overall PLAN and use any help along the way.
I did achieve my 6 KM in the hour and whilst I was having a drink and recovering at my car a person walked by and offered assistance-I explained I was independent and thanked him. This also gave me a good feeling similar to achieving my exercise plan.
